Family-friendly attractions

To avoid making kids walk long distances – especially if you are in Tuscany with a toddler – our first recommendation is to visit small villages and towns. We have listed some of the most picturesque locations that the whole family can enjoy in less than an hour of walking:

  • Siena – The main focal point is the Piazza del Campo. Then you can visit Siena Cathedral, and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo to see some art.
  • Volterra – The heart of the town is Piazza dei Priori with the Palazzo dei Priori, which is now the city hall. It’s also worth visiting is the Roman Amphitheatre and its various cathedrals
  • San Gimignano – There are 14 medieval towers which is why it is known as the Tuscan city of towers. The San Gimignano 1300 museum is definitely worth a visit.
  • Pienza – Walk along Corso il Rossellino, the street that runs through the historic city center.
  • Montepulciano – From Piazza Grande, the main square, you can see the Town Hall, the Cathedral of the Assumption, Contucci Palace, Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, and the Well of the Grifi and the Lions, all in close proximity.
  • Montalcino – The fortress, Fortezza di Montalcino, is worth visiting and if your kids can manage the climb up the fortress walls, the views are spectacular.
  • Castellina in Chianti – Rocca di Castellina is a medieval fortress with panoramic views across the town. It also has a small archaeological museum.

Outdoor activities

The Tuscan countryside is ideal for outside adventures with children. Val d’Orcia is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is no doubt one of the most beautiful Tuscan valleys dotted with olive trees, cypresses and vineyards. Located in southern Tuscany, the valley is the perfect spot for exploring nature on bicycles or on foot. Many estates also offer horse riding lessons, to give your kids the ultimate fairytale experience.

Culinary adventures

Although wine tasting tours aren’t something that you would initially think suitable for kids – some actually welcome children along. La Ciarlana and Fontesecca in Citta’ della Pieve both open their doors to all ages and offer child friendly activities.

Another option is to entertain the kids with a fun farm visit. Donkeys, goats, pigs, and even peacocks can make an appearance. Many have opportunities for cooking classes, cheese tasting and sampling other local produce.

Cultural experiences and educational opportunities

It is a myth that kids are not interested in learning whilst they are on holiday. They just have to have fun whilst doing it.

We recommend the following places:

  • Stibbert Museum about medieval weapons in Florence
  • Zoological Garden in Pistoia
  • Museum of Galileo in Florence
  • Leonardo Da Vinci Interactive Museum in Florence
  • Planetary Science Museum in Prato
  • Museum of art for children in Siena
  • Museum of the Ancient Ships in Pisa
  • Garden of the Tarots in Maremma
