How to get to Antiparos
Antiparos is a perfect destination for a day-trip from Paros, so many travelers want to know what to do in Antiparos for a day. Although you can see the most interesting things in Antiparos in only one day, we suggest you stay for 3-4 days to discover this low-profile but atmospheric island.
There are two ways to go to Antiparos:
- From Paroikia, the main port of Paros, you can take the ferry to Antiparos. The journey is about 30 minutes, but you cannot take your car or other transportation mean.
- From Pounda, a small port of Paros which is located 7 km from Paroikia, you can take the local ferry boat to go to Antiparos in 15 minutes. The ferry boat is suitable for passengers and cars.
What to do in Antiparos? The best things to see are its Chora, its astonishing beaches, Antiparos’ cave as well as Despotiko island.
The Chora of Antiparos
If you are wondering what to do on Antiparos, the top thing is to spend some time in the Chora. The Chora or capital of Antiparos has only one pedestrian road with many shops, cafes, taverns and whitewashed Cycladic houses.
White and fuchsia bougainvillea hanging from their balconies create a charming scenery, typical of an island in Greece. There, you can stroll around, take photos, eat a traditional Greek meal, drink coffee or cocktail and generally enjoy the charming atmosphere of this well-preserved settlement.
In the end of the pedestrian road, you will reach the square and the old castle, where you can enjoy the serenity of the setting.
Best beaches in Antiparos
Antiparos has many astonishing beaches with golden sand and crystal-clear waters, where you can swim, sunbath and relax. Many of them are organized and family-friendly.
Soros: Soros is the most famous beach in Antiparos, where you can spend a whole day, relaxing and enjoying the sea and the sun. It is a well-organized beach and nearby you can find two Greek taverns with fresh fish.
Agios Georgios: It is a calm beach with a well-known tavern. From there, you can take the boat to Despotiko island, one of the best cruises to do from Antiparos.
Glifa: Gilfa Beach is located in a totally unspoiled scenery, offering breathtaking view of Paros. It is unorganized, but nearby you can find hotels and taverns to buy water and food for your day on the beach. There are also many trees that provide shade.
Psaraliki: Psaraliki consists of two beaches, the one next to the other. As the place is very close to the Chora (only 10 minutes’ walk), it gets crowded during summer. However, the second beach is quieter and nudism-friendly, while the first beach is organized and full of young people and families.
Agios Spyridonas: Agios Spyridonas is a tranquil beach, protected from the winds. As it has shallow waters, it is ideal to spend a day with your kids. But keep in mind that it gets very crowded during the high season (July and August) due to its closeness to the Chora (only 200 meters away).
The cave of Antiparos
The cave of Antiparos is one of the best attractions on the island. It is located on Agios Ioannis Hill, in the middle of the island. It is considered one of the most beautiful caves with stalactites and stalagmites in Europe.
This is a nice spot to spend your day with your elder children, as they will get impressed by the rocky formations inside the imposing cave, which is part of Antiparos’ history, being a worship place throughout the centuries.
Despotiko island
Despotiko is an uninhabited island in a close distance to Agios Georgios beach. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Cyclades, as there are located the ruins of Apollo and Artemis Temples as well as a sanctuary that dates back to the 9th-8th century BC.
The tour to Despotiko island is something you should not miss in Antiparos, as it is not only a significant cultural site, but it is also a hidden gem, where you can swim and relax in one of its calm beaches away from the crowds. The most beautiful beach on Despotiko island is Livadi.
You can go to Despotiko by boat from the small port on Agios Georgios beach as well as from Antiparos’ main port.
